The Linear-Meter Formula

Start with the perimeter length, not the area. HESCO barriers are counted by linear meter of wall, because they form a continuous line. For each course (layer) of barrier, divide the perimeter by the unit length. JOESCO's HESCO barrier product page lists every standard size in stock.

Quick formula: Units per course = Perimeter (m) ÷ Unit length (m), round up to the next whole unit.

Stack Height vs Wall Height

One course of MIL 2 reaches 1.37 m, which is high enough to stop most non-tactical vehicles but not a heavy truck. Procurement officers usually need a 2.74 m or 3.96 m wall. Each additional course stacks another unit on top of the bottom row.

Add a Gate and Corner Buffer

Procurement sheets almost never list gates, and that is where field crews run out of barrier on day two of erection. Real JOESCO perimeter case studies show how often this happens and how to plan for it. Add 10–15% to the unit count for:

  • Pedestrian gates: 1–2 units to flank each gate post
  • Vehicle gates: 3–4 units on each approach to slow approach speed
  • Corners and turns: extra units because you cannot piece together fractional lengths without cut panels
  • Access ramps and culvert crossings: 2–4 units per transition

For an irregular perimeter (more than four corners), add 15%. For a clean rectangle, 10% is usually enough.

Worked Example: 320 m Perimeter, 2.74 m Tall

Perimeter = 320 m, target wall = 2.74 m, using MIL 2 units (2.74 m long each).

  1. Units per course = 320 ÷ 2.74 = 116.8 → round up to 117 units
  2. Courses = 2 (to reach 2.74 m)
  3. Base total = 117 × 2 = 234 units
  4. Gate and corner buffer (12%) = 234 × 0.12 ≈ 28 units
  5. Final order = 262 units

At an average 4.2 tonnes of fill per unit, this perimeter needs around 1,100 tonnes of fill material. Factor that into logistics, not just the barrier quote.

Common Sizing Mistakes

  1. Forgetting the gate cell. Procurement officers often hand over a perimeter length that excludes the gate opening, then the crew has to scramble for extra units when the gate goes in.
  2. Mixing unit heights per course. A wall that alternates MIL 1 and MIL 2 along the same row looks like patchwork and performs unevenly under blast load.
  3. Underestimating fill compaction. Specifying 4.2 tonnes of fill per MIL 2 unit assumes mechanical compaction. Hand-tamped fill settles to a lower density and the wall stays shorter than the design height.
  4. Ignoring wind on the perimeter. A 2.74 m tall wall in an exposed location catches significant wind. In coastal or desert sites, ask JOESCO for wind-load calculations before finalizing the unit count.
  5. Skipping the contingency. Five to ten percent extra units should sit on the pallet as spares, ready to deploy when the design changes mid-project.

Can I mix MIL sizes on one wall?

Yes. JOESCO units share the same 50 mm bolt pattern on the largest pad, but blast performance varies. Keep the same unit height per course for predictable blast loads.

What if my perimeter is on a slope?

Add 5–8% extra units for benching and step joints. Sloped ground does not achieve the same fill compaction as a flat pad, and a steeper batter shifts the load outward.
